Child abuse victims meet MPs in Poland to demand change

CHILD abuse victims in Poland met politicians of the opposition Civic Platform party and human rights activists yesterday for a meeting promoting legislation to protect children from predatory priests.

Marek Lisinski, of the Don’t Be Afraid foundation, was abused as an altar boy in the 1980s and has struggled with alcoholism and depression ever since.

He summoned the meeting, which followed a rare public protest in Warsaw at the weekend focusing on clerical child abuse.

Around 200 people attended Sunday’s protest, bearing banners reading: “Bishops, protecting paedophiles is a crime” and: “We are fed up with the clergy’s cowardice.”

MPs of the ruling Law and Justice party did not attend the meeting. The party is close to the nation’s Catholic Church, which has been a key player in Polish politics since it helped orchestrate the restoration of capitalism in 1989.

Mr Lisinski says the Church remains “passive” and has not taken responsibility for rooting out the problem of abuser priests. A Vatican summit has been scheduled for February to discuss the issue.
