Co-operation with Turkey over gas exploration will wait on a reunification deal, says Cyprus

CO-OPERATION in exploiting potential oil and gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean is dependent on Cypriot reunification, the country’s President Nicos Anastasiades said yesterday.

Cyprus is exploring the seabed in collaboration with Egypt and Israel following the discovery of gas reserves, but Turkey has launched a rival search, saying it is entitled to a share. Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and is the only country to recognise its puppet state, Northern Cyprus, in the north of the island.

“We continue to upgrade our energy co-operation with countries in the eastern Mediterranean and in Europe and certainly with Turkey in the event of a Cyprus settlement,” Mr Anastasiades said.

Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said Turkish threats would not prompt the country to compromise on its sovereignty or territorial integrity.

“We prefer to have excellent relations with our neighbours, but it’s up to Turkey. The problem in the region is Turkey,” he said.
