Communist Party says now is the time for the left to force its way into power

PARALYSIS in the Conservative Party is an opportunity for the left to force a general election and return a Labour government with a mandate to negotiate a people’s Brexit, the Communist Party said last night.

The party’s political committee heard that the unsuccessful challenge to Theresa May from Tory MPs – which still saw a third of them declare no confidence in their leader – showed that the current government’s bogus Brexit deal was dead in the water.

But it condemned efforts by smaller opposition parties to manoeuvre Labour into support for a second referendum on EU membership, warning that any bid to overrule the 2016 referendum could spell electoral disaster.

Instead, the labour movement should unite in a campaign for an election to return a government that could negotiate a real exit from the EU, that allowed Labour to intervene in the economy, extend public ownership without restrictions and use state aid and procurement policy to address the challenges of climate change.

The party acknowledged concerns that workers’ rights should not be “left behind” those in the EU after Brexit. However, it was pointed out that workers’ rights are not advancing, but rather are under attack across the EU.

It condemned Hungary’s new “slave labour law” demanded by German car manufacturers and the attacks on public ownership, jobs and pensions by Emmanuel Macron’s government in France.

A real battle for workers’ rights would not rest on seeking guarantees from Brussels but on building the TUC’s New Deal for Workers campaign into a militant industrial front, building on the successes of recent union organisation in precarious workplaces such as McDonald’s, Amazon, TGI Friday’s and Wetherspoons, it declared.
