GERMANY: A shooting at a Jehovah’s Witnesses hall in the city of Hamburg on Thursday killed eight people, including the as yet unnamed perpetrator, according to local police.

An unspecified number of other people were wounded, some of them seriously.

There was still no word on a possible motive for the shooting.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, a former Hamburg mayor, described the shooting as “a brutal act of violence.”

TUNISIA: The Tunisian coastguard announced on Thursday that 14 migrants from sub-Saharan African countries had drowned and 54 others had been rescued after the boat carrying them sank off the coast.

The boat sank off the coast of Sfax in central-eastern Tunisia on Wednesday night and comes as many migrants from sub-Saharan Africa are seeking to leave, after President Kais Saied made remarks against illegal immigration.

GREECE: Three more Greek rail officials were charged on Thursday in connection with a train crash that killed 57 people, as protests continued and the government promised to overhaul rail safety.

Two unnamed station managers and a supervisor were charged with endangering rail safety leading to the loss of life.

The three have been summoned to provide additional testimony and have not been detained.

OHIO: United States railroads were warned to take certain cars out of service on Thursday after Norfolk Southern discovered loose wheels on a car which was involved in a derailment in Ohio last Saturday.

The cause of the derailment near Springfield is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board and is the latest in a string of high-profile derailments.
