Theatre company run by charity is to be evicted after council leases building to commercial company

A SUCCESSFUL theatre company run by a charity is to be evicted after the council which owns its building decided to lease it to a commercial company.

Performing arts and entertainment union Equity is campaigning to save The Exchange Theatre, which faces eviction by North Tyneside Council.

The union has written to the mayor of North Tyneside asking her to stop the eviction.

Equity official regional official for North East, Yorkshire and Humberside Dominic Bascombe said: “The focus of North Tyneside Council seems to be on buildings rather than enhancing the cultural value on offer.

“This is simply wrong. We know that when arts and culture is diminished there is a long-lasting impact on local communities.”

North Tyneside Council said a new operator would invest in and develop the Exchange and efforts were being made to keep staff in their jobs.

Equity is also campaigning against closure of the historic Coliseum Theatre in Oldham, which is due to close on March 31 after Arts Council England withdrew its funding.
