Dawn Butler seeks protection for title of nurse in Health and Care Bill amendment

LABOUR’S Dawn Butler has submitted an amendment to the government’s Health and Care Act seeking to protect the title of “nurse” from abuse.

Ms Butler warned that currently “almost anyone could use the title.

“It is important that we truly respect the experience and expertise of a registered nurse.”

More than 30 MPs, including Tory Bob Blackman, have said they back the amendment, which states: “A person may not practise or carry on business under any name, style of title containing the word ‘nurse’ unless that person is registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.”

The government has previously said it is reviewing the protection of medical workers’ titles and is exploring the issue alongside regulator the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The Commons is due to debate the final stages of the Health and Care Bill tomorrow and Tuesday. Critics say it entrenches corporate control of the NHS and removes accountability in the allocation of contracts to the private sector.
