DONCASTER will honour its coal mining past with a planned £135,000 monument dedicated to the industry in the area.
The Yorkshire coalfield was so vast that it was broken into four administrative areas by the National Coal Board – Barnsley, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Doncaster.
Although the whole of the Yorkshire area was generally seen as militant, the Doncaster area was the most militant and politically active of the four.
It had 12 collieries employing 16,000 men. The last pit in the area, Hatfield, closed in 2015.
Organisers of the monument project said: “With the final closure of Hatfield pit in 2015, a chapter of our mining history came to an end, but that isn’t the end of the book.
“Our mining story lives on in the hearts and minds and experiences of our ex-miners and their families, and in their stories.”

The Morning Star is unique, as a lone socialist voice in a sea of corporate media. We offer a platform for those who would otherwise never be listened to, coverage of stories that would otherwise be buried.
The rich don’t like us, and they don’t advertise with us, so we rely on you, our readers and friends. With a regular donation to our monthly Fighting Fund, we can continue to thumb our noses at the fat cats and tell truth to power.
