Electricity workers win pay increase

ELECTRICITY workers have secured a pay rise of nearly £3,000 after Unite challenged Scottish Southern Electricity (SSE) over its London allowance.

About 100 meter-maintenance workers at the company gained a pay increase of £2,807, the union announced today.

The win follows a six-month-long campaign waged by Unite to get SSE to listen to the collective grievance after about half of its London workers had been refused a London weighting that was being paid to others.

The agreement secured by Unite also covers workers employed in depots in Slough and Tiptree who travel into London.

Unite regional officer Jane Jeffery said: “It’s a great result for the workers in London.

“The union is now seeking to ensure that the workers also get any back pay that they are due.

“It shows that it pays to be in a union that is prepared to fight for your rights at work.”
