Engineering workers set to strike for higher pay

WORKERS at a Darlington engineering firm are to strike over pay.

Members of general union GMB at Cleveland Bridge, which manufactures steel fabrications, will strike on Thursday and Monday.

GMB says the workers have been in dispute over pay since May.

The union says that last month the company imposed a 2.3 per cent pay increase, which the 90 workers have not accepted.

The company also refused to backdate the pay rise to April, the anniversary of its pay agreement.

Talks will take place through conciliation service Acas tomorrow.

GMB regional organiser Mark Wilson said: “The company has agreed to last-ditch talks with Acas on Wednesday.

“However, strike action on Thursday and Monday will take place if no agreement can be reached.

“Our members have not taken this decision lightly but are fed up with the company’s approach to this pay round.”
