World in brief: August 1, 2023

MYANMAR: The junta has reduced the prison sentences of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi in an act of clemency connected to a religious holiday in the Buddhist-majority country.

Former President Win Myint also had his sentence reduced as part of the clemency granted to more than 7,000 prisoners but Ms Suu Kyi is still serving a 27-year prison term.

INDIA: Authorities imposed a curfew, suspended internet service and deployed thousands of paramilitary forces today to parts of northern Haryana state after deadly communal clashes spread to Gurugram, a city just outside the capital, New Delhi, leaving at least four dead.

The violence began on Monday afternoon when Hindus and Muslims clashed in Haryana’s Nuh district during a religious procession by a Hindu nationalist group.

RUSSIA: Kremlin officials today accused Kiev of yet another attack on Moscow and its surroundings with drones, one of which hit a building in the capital that was damaged by a drone just days ago in a similar attack early on Sunday.

 Authorities claimed that the intensified attacks on the capital region reflect failures in Ukraine’s counteroffensive, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said over the weekend that “the war is gradually coming back to Russian territory.”

INDONESIA: Jakarta agreed today to send emergency humanitarian assistance to the country’s eastern Papua province which is suffering from drought that killed at least six people and left thousands facing hunger in the past two months.

The National Disaster Management Agency’s spokesperson said that the drought has killed at least six people and left people without access to clean water.
