AT least five people were killed and many more injured in two separate Turkish air strikes on Iraqi Kurdistan yesterday, one of which targeted a UN-administered refugee camp.

The latest massacre occurred as Turkish missiles struck two cars in the Chamchamal district of Slemani, deep inside Kurdish territory. 

Two civilians and three alleged PKK guerillas were killed in the targeted attacks in Tutaqal village. 

“Two Turkish drones struck twice,” Heimin Bahjat, mayor of the village of Agjalar, said.

“The second strike hit a pick-up truck, killing five people, including two civilians.” A medical source confirmed that the bodies of two civilians had been brought to Chamchamal hospital. 

A PKK spokesman confirmed that the Kurdish resistance fighters were heavily wounded in the first attack.

“When the civilians ran to help them and take them to hospital, they were also targeted by the drones. Two civilians lost their lives, along with the three wounded guerillas,” he said. 

Village mukhtar Aram Haji Kaka Khan is understood to be one of those killed in the drone strike along with villager Ismail Ibrahim.

Thousands of angry residents at the Makhmour refugee camp in northern Iraq made their way to the United Nations office after a number were injured in a Turkish attack. 

The UN building has been abandoned since 2014 when Isis took control of the camp for just over a month before being repelled by the PKK.

Requests for press comment are usually ignored although the Morning Star was offered an “off the record” discussion earlier this year, which never materialised. 

Camp officials said that the UN remained “quiet as always” after a number were injured in Saturday’s air strike. 

“This is not the first and not the last attack,” a spokesperson told the Morning Star yesterday.

“Children are the most affected by the attack. Half of the [13,000] population of the camp are children,” they explained. 

“The Turkish invading state continues its massacres in Kurdistan with Nato weapons. The purpose of all attacks is to evacuate the camp, the will of the people to surrender.”

Makhmour camp is frequently targeted by Turkish jets with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan labelling it “an incubator of terrorism” linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Last summer he demanded the UN “clean up the camp, or I will” saying Turkey would act in its capacity as a member state if it didn’t. 

Days later he launched missiles at the refugee camp to global silence. 

At least one person was reported to have been killed in a revenge attack on Turkey’s Zelekan base launched by the Iranian-backed Popular Mobilisation Forces yesterday morning.
