Reach for the Star We stand with the striking rail workers

Circulation manager BERNADETTE KEAVENEY explains why the paper is proud that the RMT is one of our 11 shareholder unions

REGULAR readers will know that last year we downsized our offices and, in the process of clearing out, we found a large amount of bumph that had been hanging around for decades, gathering dust and decaying with neglect.

One interesting find was a small box containing promotional leaflets for the Morning Star and its predecessor the Daily Worker. I spent last evening scanning these documents so we would have a record, and the originals will be sent to the Marx Memorial Library to add to our archive.

Many of the leaflets were for use at factory gates to encourage workers to buy the Daily Worker and indeed one leaflet still had the printers invoice attached showing a print run of 30,000 copies.

It is difficult to imagine now the huge factories with thousands of workers. How the demographics of work has changed.

It was apt to find one leaflet commenting on the different message from the capitalist press compared with the Daily Worker on a then current railway strike. Certainly, the message hasn’t changed. Hysterics in Fleet Street!

The Sun this week accused the RMT of starting a class war, the Mail called for Labour MPs who go on picket lines to be punished and the Telegraph said strikes should be banned. By contrast, the Morning Star stands with rail workers and links their struggle to the whole working class needing a pay rise.

We are proud RMT is one of our 11 shareholder unions and we are proud to stand with it, but we need a louder voice which means more people to become a regular reader.

Thank you to those readers who this week have taken the Morning Star along to RMT picket lines to show our solidarity to these strikers. Let’s continue to get our message out share our stories on social media, pass your paper on, buy an additional copy to take to meetings and encourage everyone to buy the paper at least once a week.
