Sport in brief: August 2, 2023

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The Cymru Premier doesn’t kick off for another fortnight but reigning champions The New Saints are already out of Europe after losing 3-2 at Luxembourg’s Swift Hesperange on Tuesday for a 4-3 aggregate defeat in the Europa Conference League second qualifying round.

Wales’s remaining hopes of European glory now lie with Haverfordwest overturning a 2-1 first leg deficit when they host the Faroes’ B36 Torshavn tomorrow evening.

NETBALL: World Cup action continues this morning with England and top-ranked Australia both putting their unbeaten records on the line when they clash in Cape Town.

Tomorrow’s winner will finish top of their group and theoretically receive an easier pairing in Saturday’s semi-finals.

New Zealand take on Jamaica, South Africa face Uganda, Scotland meet Fiji, Tonga play Malawi and Wales are up against Trinidad and Tobago in tomorrow’s other fixtures.

SPEEDWAY: Leicester get the chance to make amends for Monday’s surprise home loss to Ipswich when they meet fellow Premiership play-off hopefuls Sheffield at their Beaumont Park arena tomorrow evening.

Sheffield will give a debut to triple world champion and British captain Tai Woffinden after signing him as an injury replacement for Jack Holder. The Ipswich Witches travel to King’s Lynn in tomorrow night’s other meeting.

CYCLING: The first ever combined cycling world championships begin with track and para-track events at Glasgow’s Chris Hoy velodrome tomorrow morning before the junior downhill mountain biking competition starts at Nevis Range near Fort William.

On the track tomorrow there are qualifiers for both the men’s and women’s team sprints and pursuits as well as the finals of the women’s individual pursuit, men’s C5 scratch race and C4 200 metres time trial.
