Glasgow Ikea workers rally for reinstatement of sacked union rep

WORKERS and trade unionists gathered outside an Ikea store in Glasgow today to demand the reinstatement of a union organiser sacked for “doing his job.”

Usdaw representative Richie Venton was thrown out of the furniture giant’s Glasgow shop after reporting to union members planned cuts to pay and conditions.

Mr Venton, who had worked at the site for more than 12 years, had been informed by bosses that a move to cut company sick pay eligibility could leave staff to survive on just £95 per week.

Earlier this week, Ikea shifted its position slightly, confirming that it will pay full wages to staff forced to self-isolate for 14 days during the coronavirus pandemic.

But the company has so far failed to respond to calls for Mr Venton’s return to work and other demands about working conditions, and it could yet face industrial action.

A group of trade unionists, including representatives from RMT, CWU, Unite, Unison, FBU, UCU, Clydebank TUC and Usdaw, gathered in solidarity, pointing to the need for solidarity between workers.

UCU Strathclyde chairman Brian Garvey said that the trade-union movement is “incredulous” at Mr Venton’s treatment, warning Ikea it could face a boycott if he is not returned to his job.

Labour councillor Matt Kerr said that the organiser’s own work meant he deserved the support of those across the country.

He added: “The idea Ikea needs to be taking money and wages off staff, forcing them onto benefits, is morally indefensible.”

The Reinstate Richie Venton campaign said there was a growing determination to win, and that “Ikea can’t hide in a bunker and pretend this will go away.”
