GMB survey reveals huge public backing for ending austerity

THE majority of people of all political leanings are in favour of government ending austerity by implementing policies that include giving public-sector workers a pay rise, according to a new poll.

Even Conservative voters were part of the 68 per cent of respondents who said that it’s time to end the public-sector pay freeze, a survey conducted by Survation for general union GMB revealed today shows.

Seventy-seven per cent of the 1,053 people said they wanted Chancellor Philip Hammond to increase investment in public infrastructure such as road, rail and schools, and 76 per cent wanted more spending on public services.

Seventy-two per cent wanted more funding for local councils, and 67 per cent wanted closed public services to be reopened.

After Prime Minister Theresa May announced that her government would put an end to its austerity policies, 80 per cent of those who voted Conservative last year told pollsters they wanted to see real-terms increases in spending on public services announced in the Budget on Monday.

Sixty-one per cent of Tory supporters are in favour of reopening closed services.

GMB general secretary Tim Roache said: “This polling shows people have simply had enough of austerity and now expect the Prime Minister to deliver on her promise to put an end to it."

He insisted the Chancellor “must use” Monday’s Budget to properly invest in infrastructure and public services.

“Overwhelming numbers of voters who backed the Conservatives at the last election expect the Prime Minister to keep her promise to put an end to austerity,” Mr Roache added.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said that Mr Hammond must take heed of the huge public demand for finally ending Tory austerity.

He added: “The government has to act. We don’t want any publicity gimmicks but real action.”
