Industrial RMT releases hard-hitting videos in defence of guards

A HARD-HITTING video has been launched by rail union RMT to keep the guard on trains.

The short film, titled Unguarded, weaves together stories from three passengers about their harrowing experiences, showing the dire safety consequences of axing guards.

One young girl, Paula, was left “terrified” after a “really creepy” man followed her onto the train, came into her carriage and started staring at her.

“He started asking me questions like ‘where am I going’, ‘have I got a boyfriend’,” she said.

“I just knew I had to get away from him, so I pushed past him and made my way to the next carriage. And then I realised he was following me.

“So I just kept going. I found the end seat and I just curled up and waited.

“Suddenly the train stops, other passengers got on, the man got off. I was just crying and shaking.

“Other passengers asked me ‘am I OK?’ and they told me to report it to the guard. Well, I told them there is no guard.”

An elderly man, Jack, recounts his experience of being locked in a train toilet.

“I panicked, I really panicked, so I pulled the alarm and nothing happened,” he said.

“And then, after a little while, the train stopped and I was rescued, but it was the train driver and not a guard.

“They don’t give a damn about the old and the disabled. How would you feel if it was your mum and dad?

Finally, mother Amy reveals how she spotted a suspicious bag underneath one of the seats when she boarded a train with her baby Kira.

She pushed her pram through the length of the train looking for the guard but could not find one.

“So, what now? Do I sound the alarm? What kind of sense does it make having no guards on the train?

“The train companies should be ashamed.”

The RMT stressed its commitment to use “every tool at our disposal to defend the role of the guard” in the face of profit-driven moves to axe the safety-critical staff.

General secretary Mick Cash insisted he will not let the themes of “safety, security and accessibility” get shoved aside in the “barrage of rhetoric” from the private companies, the government and their cheerleaders at the Rail Delivery Group.
