Happy birthday, Cuba!

Tributes have been pouring in for the socialist island ahead of its 60th birthday

To congratulate the Cuban people on their achievements and the 60th anniversary of the Revolution the Cuba Solidarity Campaign has launched an online card and is asking people to sign, leave a message or add a photo.

Hundreds of friends from across the globe, including parliamentarians and trade union leaders had sent messages of solidarity.

Below is a selection of some of the messages received online so far:

CHRIS WILLIAMSON MP
Despite sanctions, an illegal blockade and the enmity of the world’s biggest superpower, you have built a society which puts people before profit, providing free education and US healthcare for all. That a Cuban worker today lives longer than an American, in spite of everything, is a testament not only to your achievements but the wisdom of socialism. May your indomitable spirit continue to inspire around the world.

KAREN LEE MP Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Cuba
Sending very best wishes to my Cuban friends on the 60th anniversary of the revolution.

NEIL FINDLAY MSP
Solidarity and best wishes to the Cuban people – 60 years of social change under the most difficult circumstances is a fantastic achievement and an inspiration to others -socialism and internationalism in action.

ANDY DE LA TOUR, ACTOR
Cuba, its people and its leadership, are an inspiration to progressive forces around the globe and have been now for 60 years. Cuba has demonstrated what can be achieved when the needs of humanity are put before profit. Solidarity and best wishes on your 60th anniversary.

MIKE DUKES, Britain
Congratulations on your 60th anniversary and on your magnificent achievements in the face of extreme hostility from the US government. Here's to lifting the blockade and closing Guantanamo! Solidarity!

MARIAN WINGROVE, Britain
Cuba is a shining example to the world of how we all should live

KURT WIRTH (Germany)
Venceremos!

DAISY BATHUSI (Botswana)
Congratulations on Cuba achieving the second highest number of women MPs in the world at 53.2 per cent. In Botswana, the figure is just 9.5 per cent.

SISA MAKABENI (South Africa)
Thank you for your contribution to the liberation of the peoples of Southern Africa – it will be forever be etched in our hearts. History speaks for itself with regard to Cuba's internationalist solidarity with the oppressed masses of our people without seeking any gain in return.

PHIL BRAND (Britain)
The Cuban Revolution liberated not just Cuba, but inspired the liberation of Algeria, Angola, Guinea and South Africa and Namibia. Small wonder that so many African baby boys were named Fidel, Castro or Che. Sixty years of proving that another world is possible free from the brutality of neoliberalism, the freedom loving peoples of the world salute the heroic struggle and the glorious revolution of the Cuban people sixty years on — an inspiration to all who dream of freedom. VIVA CUBA!

STEPHANIE WILLIAMS (Britain)
Cuba has demonstrated what can be achieved when the needs of humanity are the focus of a society rather than the pursuit of profit. Solidarity!

EMMA McINLEY (Britain)
Against all the odds, under the most challenging circumstances from the US blockade, Cuba has developed a society based on social justice, education, health and internationalism. Congratulations and solidarity greetings!

MATTHEW HUGH LINGARD (Ireland)
I would like to send a message to all the Cuban people to mark the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and congratulate you all on your achievements since 1959. I visited Cuba in 2010 and I have to admit, my heart has never left. Despite the blockade, healthcare and educational improvement have been made (and in a fair way) and your general solidarity with the human race warms my soul. To use a quote by a hero: “The enemy's hate grows as the revolution becomes stronger.”

BARBARA PATILLA (Britain)
Your continued success, despite all the forces stacked against you, is a beacon of hope in the surrounding dark world.

RIANNA HUMBLE (Britain)
Solidarity with the people of Cuba! Your humanitarian works contrast starkly with the record of a US president determined to turn the clock back and to extend tyranny.

TERRY BROUGH (Britain)
Viva Cuba libre! The 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and the achievements of the Cuban people since 1959 are truly inspirational. Set against the vicious blockade by the US, the achievements are astonishing. The free people of Cuba continue to give us a lead to follow. Even against the most severe opposition, placed in the way of progress by the forces of imperialism, the prospect of another world order is maintained. We salute you! Viva Cuba!

KEVIN TERRY, Unite South West chair
Congratulations on the 60th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution with the unjust and illegal blockade you have achieved so much against such odds.

GEOFFREY BOTTOMS (Britain)
Solidarity greetings and congratulations to the Cuban people celebrating the 60th anniversary of their Revolution and its many achievements. Your struggle against US imperialism is an inspiration to many and we will continue to defend your right to pursue your socialist future free from outside interference and to campaign against the US blockade and for the return of occupied Guantanamo to the Cuban people. Hasta la victoria siempre!

MARI BURTON (Britain)
Visiting Cuba and witnessing the amazing achievements your country has made in education and healthcare has truly inspired me. Now I have seen how Cuba does it I am determined to work towards building a better, more caring and more effective education system in England. Gracias Cuba!

ANDY FRAMPTON (Britain)
Cuba, you are a beacon to us all that a better world is possible. Please don’t change. We can learn so much. Thank you. Yo Soy Fidel.

Thank you for making child health a priority in Cuba. Your country has been an inspiration to health professionals throughout the world.

GAIL HARPER (Australia)
Cuba remains a beacon to the world for its justice, fairness and care for its people. Australia is a rich country but still has more than a million children living in poverty. We have a lot to learn from you. Thank you for your example, particularly given the hardships you endure due to the actions of the US.

EMILY JONES (Britain)
Your country is an inspiration to us here in the UK. I visited in May to go to the May Day parade in Havana and it was one of the best things I've ever done. I can’t wait to visit Cuba again one day. Viva la revoluçion!

GAWAIN LITTLE, National Executive, NEU
In the 60 years since the revolution, Cuba has been an inspiration to people struggling for justice and equality across the world. Cuba’s socialist system shows the world that it is possible for the people to truly hold power in their society and to prioritise health education and international solidarity, even under conditions of an illegal blockade. No Mas Bloqueo! Viva Cuba! Viva Socialismo!
