Rugby League Hull retain Challenge Cup in win over Wigan

Hull 18-14 Wigan

Hull FC won consecutive Challenge Cups for the first time in their history when they defeated Wigan Warriors by 18 points to 14 on Saturday afternoon.

Man of the match Marc Sneyd became the first player to win the Lance Todd Trophy outright two years running following his impressive kicking display. The scrum-half had a hand, or more accurately a foot, in two of his side’s tries, kicked a 40-20 which led to another, and converted all three.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Sneyd of his achievement.

“I said last year when I got it [that] when you see the names on the trophy, you can’t quite believe it. To get it twice – I’m over the moon with that.”

Wigan opened the scoring in a highly entertaining first-half when Thomas Leuluai’s kick bounced kindly into the arms of Anthony Gelling. He passed inside to John Bateman who merely had to place the ball over the whitewash.

Hull responded, and Fetuli Talanoa was the first recipient of a Sneyd kick; out-jumping Liam Marshall who was given a torrid time having replaced Thomas Davies in the line-up just before kick off.

On Hull’s other wing Mahe Fonua had made an all-action start to the game and crossed for a try of his own. Again, it came from a Sneyd kick but it was Albert Kelly who got the important touch, leaping above the Wigan defence to palm the ball back to his teammate.

Wigan scored just before half time when George Williams sent Oliver Gildart over in the corner. Williams missed the coversion so Hull took a 12-10 lead in at half time.

Joe Burgess scored in the corner after the break, after Tony Clubb had a try disallowed by the video referee, and though Wigan were on the back foot on another day they could easily have snatched it in the final minutes.
