IRAN’S communists responded today to a Twitter war between President Hassan Rouhani and his US counterpart Donald Trump by pointing out that both countries have “deceitful leaders” at the helm.
“Both Ali Khamenei [Iran’s supreme leader] and Donald Trump … would, without hesitation, lie to their people to stay in power and pursue their own narrow interests,” said the Tudeh Party of Iran.
To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 23, 2018
“They would resort to any option to overcome the various crises they face.”
Mr Rouhani had warned at the weekend of “the mother of all wars” if the US attacked Iran, telling Washington: “Don’t play with the lion’s tail. This would only lead to regret.”
The US president went one better today. In a caps-only tweet, he roared at Tehran never to threaten the US again “or you will suffer consequences the like of which few throughout history have ever suffered before.”
Iran’s official news agency IRNA dismissed the Trump tweet, calling it a "passive reaction" to President Rouhani's remarks.
However, the Tudeh Party warned: “Considering the volatile situation in the Middle East and current hostilities between the Iranian regime and US administration, the war of words between the two countries could easily escalate.”
The communists stressed that all progressives and defenders of peace reject outside interference by the US, together with its Saudi and Israeli allies, in Iran’s internal affairs.
They reaffirmed their belief that “the future of Iran should only be determined by its peoples and through the struggle of its progressive forces to bring to an end the theocratic dictatorship in the country.”
