Journalists demand quick release of kidnapped Yemeni reporter

JOURNALISTS are demanding the swift release of Yemeni reporter Abdulsalam al-Dais after he was kidnapped by armed Houthis on Wednesday.

The Yemen Journalists’ Syndicate (YJS), backed by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), condemned of the kidnapping and called for an end to the targeting and harassment of journalists in Yemen.

Since the start of the devastating civil war in 2014, journalists have faced death threats, kidnapping, beatings and torture with many forced to flee Yemen.

Earlier this week the YJS released its biannual report listing 100 cases where media freedom had been violated in the first half of 2018 — 38 were kidnappings.

IFJ general secretary Anthony Bellanger said: “This new kidnapping shows a clear pattern of using journalists as bargaining chips in the ongoing conflict.

“We deeply resent this, call for the journalists’ immediate release and hold the Houthi group responsible for his safety.”
