THERESA MAY has failed to achieve any “meaningful changes” to her Brexit deal from the European Union, Labour have claimed after the Prime Minister had awkward exchanges in Brussels.
Ms May appealed to the 27 EU leaders for “political and legal reassurances” to offer MPs who oppose the Northern Ireland backstop.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he has been “crystal clear” that there is no room for renegotiation and rejected her request to put a 12-month limit on the backstop to avoid a hard border in Ireland.
Yesterday, the pair were pictured having a tense hushed conversation as EU leaders sat down round for discussions.
She appeared uncomfortable while Mr Juncker had his hand on her arm and appeared to shake his head and say “no” several times.
It has also been reported that Ms May approached him over her pleas being rebuffed by the EU before saying: “You called me nebulous!”
The night before, he had described her requests for concessions as “nebulous and imprecise” in criticising her lack of clarity over what she was seeking from the future relationship.
Shadow Brexit minister Sir Keir Starmer called for a meaningful vote on the deal before Christmas, adding: “We cannot go on like this.”
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “The last 24 hours have confirmed that Theresa May’s Brexit deal is dead in the water.”
Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster, whose party props up Ms May’s minority government and campaigns against a hard border, said it now depends on whether the PM will “stand up” to the EU or “roll over as has happened previously.”
She added: “This is a difficulty of the Prime Minister’s own making.
“If she had listened to our warnings and stood by her public commitments, we would not be in this situation.”
