LABOUR MP Fiona Onasanya was kicked out of the party before Christmas after being convicted of lying to police to avoid a speeding charge, the party confirmed today.

The Peterborough MP, who faces a possible prison sentence, had already been suspended after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice at the Old Bailey in December.

Parliamentary rules require removing an MP who is jailed for at least a year.

But, if the sentence is less, a recall petition can force a by-election if it is signed by more than 10 per cent of the electorate in the Cambridgeshire seat, where Labour has a majority of just 607 votes.

Labour chairman Ian Lavery told the Peterborough Telegraph that the party are “raring to go for a by-election” and that he is “absolutely confident” that they would win.

Ms Onasanya was convicted after a retrial of colluding with her brother Festus after her car was clocked going 41mph in a 30mph zone in the Cambridgeshire village of Thorney in July 2017.

A Notice of Intended Prosecution that was sent to her was sent back naming the guilty driver as her brother’s acquaintance Aleks Antipow, who was visiting his parents in Russia.
