Unison Conference ’18 Labour must stop sell-off of Swansea leisure centres

UNISON is urging Swansea’s Labour council to stop the outsourcing of the town’s leisure centres.

The union is calling on the City and County of Swansea Council to halt its proposed outsourcing of three local leisure centres prior to a meeting tomorrow.

The meeting will determine the future management and control of the leisure centres and similar facilities and services.

Speaking ahead of the event, Unison Swansea branch secretary Chris Cooze said the union was resolute in believing that outsourcing facilities is not the right answer to budget cuts and austerity.

“The council is a key employer in Swansea, and we need to maintain quality services and jobs,” he said.

“There are many examples of public services outsourced on the premise that someone else can run it better and cheaper, only for it to fail with the public sector picking up the pieces.”

Mr Cooze also pointed out that the council’s previous promise to outsource the IT services did not reap any financial benefit.
