LABOUR called on Nicola Sturgeon today to use Scottish Parliament powers to reverse a Tory tax cut.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard wants the top rate of tax to be set at 50p, as it was until George Osborne cut it in 2013.

At First Minister’s Questions in Holyrood, he revealed research showing that the number of people who would be on the top rate had increased by 24 per cent since the cut.

“In Scotland today the richest 1 per cent now own more personal wealth than the whole of the poorest 50 per cent put together,” Mr Leonard said.

“In a country where more than a quarter of a million children are living in poverty, that suggests that there is something profoundly wrong with our economic system and the priorities of this Parliament.”

First Minister Ms Sturgeon, who has raised the top rate on earning over £150,000 to 46 per cent, branded Labour’s proposals “completely incredible and incompetent.”
