AT LEAST 10 people were killed today, eight of them Coptic Christians, by a gunman who opened fire outside a Cairo church.
Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said the attack outside the Coptic church of Mar Mina left at least one policeman dead and five others wounded, including two critically.
He also said the assailant was killed in the shoot-out, though the Interior Ministry said he had been wounded and then arrested in possession of “an explosive device.”
Copycat terrorists claiming allegiance to Isis have emerged in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula and carried out a number of attacks on soldiers and Coptic Christians, who make up about a tenth of the country’s population.
Christians and churches have also come under attack from the banned Muslim Brotherhood organisation of ousted president Mohammed Morsi.
Security has been stepped up around churches prior to Christmas, which Copts celebrate on January 7, in line with the Eastern Orthodox churches.
