Leyla Guven enters her 50th day of hunger strike

REVOLUTIONARY women in Turkey vowed to defeat capitalism, fascism and male-dominated exploitation today as jailed Kurdish opposition MP Leyla Guven began the 50th day of her hunger strike.

The General Assembly of Women’s United Revolutionary Movement (KBHD) said that Ms Guven, the People’s Democratic Party MP for Hakkari, “personified resistance,” demanding her release and an end to the isolation of jailed Kurdistan Workers Party leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been held on Imrali island since 1999.

“Leyla Guven intended that this resistance is not only to end Abdullah Ocalan’s isolation but the same time to raise the voice of a people the government is trying to silence,” the group said in a statement

“Chauvinist male sovereign, sexist policies are imposed on the resilience of Kurdish women.”

Ms Guven was jailed in January for statements opposing Operation Olive Branch, Turkey’s illegal invasion and occupation of the largely Kurdish city of Afrin in northern Syria.

She began her hunger strike on November 7 insisting that it will become a death fast unless her conditions are met. Her health has seriously deteriorated and supporters across the world have initiated solidarity hunger strikes to raise awareness of her plight.

A Diyarbakir court ruled on Wednesday that Ms Guven should remain in prison, with her hearing rescheduled for January 25. If convicted, she faces between 25 and 46 years in prison.

The KBDH proclamed that “resistance changes the direction of the wind,” adding that Ms Guven’s actions are striking fear into “the fascist, anti-feminist regime of President [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan.”

The group insisted that Mr Erdogan and the system he represents are doomed to defeat.

“Leyla Guven is our will. We won’t let them take our will. The darkest moment of night is the closest moment to the dawn.

“Freedom, equality, the search for peace, the struggle for revolution will also remove fascism and bullying at the darkest moment,” said the KBDH.
