Cleaners at Luton airport on strike over low pay

LOW paid cleaners at Luton Airport began a week of strike action today against “Scrooge” bosses.

The Unite members, who are employed by the agency Sasse, are paid the minimum wage of £7.83 which they say causes real financial hardship.

Sasse have offered a three-year pay deal to increase their pay, but this means that workers will still not be getting improved pay by 2021.

Unite regional officer Jeff Hodge said: “Bosses at Luton Airport are behaving like Scrooge.

“With cleaners out on strike for a full seven days in the run-up to Christmas the stoppage will bring cleaning services at the UK’s fifth busiest airport to a virtual standstill.

“With healthy profits and growing passenger numbers, Luton Airport and its contractor have no excuse for paying workers below the real Living Wage.”
