Lula's legal team make new application for his release

FORMER Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s legal team have made a new application for his release from jail.

The petition was filed yesterday with the country’s highest court, accusing Sergio Moro, the judge who convicted Lula, of bias by accepting a nomination for justice minister from president-elect Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula and Mr Bolsonaro were the top two candidates in this year's presidential race, with all polls showing Lula far ahead of the eventual winner and other candidates.

Mr Moro’s decision to jail Lula made him ineligible to stand in last month’s election and when Mr Bolsonaro won, he announced the judge as his justice minister.

According to Lula’s lawyers, Mr Moro has proved to be partial and was motivated by his own interests and notorious enmity towards the ex-president, instead of judging according to the evidence.

They called the case against Lula superficial at best, saying it in no way justified the conviction.
