Manchester tram workers accept pay deal

TRAM workers in Manchester have accepted a three-year pay deal brokered by Unite.

The 340 workers, who work for the city’s Metrolink service, voted overwhelmingly to accept the deal, which is a 3.7 per cent pay rise backdated from January 2018.

There will be a further 10 per cent pay rise from January 2019 and the January 2020 pay rise will match appropriate inflationary statistics.

Unite celebrated the package, which will see grade three tram drivers — those with more than a year and a half experience — be given a £3,000 pay rise.

The union's regional officer Steve Davies said that members were "pleased" with “one of the best such negotiated deals in the UK this year.

“The deal addresses the long-term concerns of our members who were angry at the fact that their previous pay levels were up to £7,000 less than tram drivers in other UK cities for doing the same job.”
