MAS says Evo Morales will run its next election campaign

BOLIVIA’S Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) voted for Evo Morales to run its 2020 election campaign on Saturday.

The vote is an expression of defiance against the coup government of Jeanine Anez, which was installed by the army after it moved against Mr Morales following his re-election last month.

Ms Anez’s regime says the country’s elected leader cannot stand in future elections and has charged him with terrorism and sedition on the grounds that he allegedly masterminded mass protests against the military coup.

The new government has launched a brutal clampdown on pro-democracy demonstrators, killing scores, and last week set up a new “counterterror” unit to persecute what it called “narco-terrorists” it said had dominated the country from 2006-19 — Mr Morales’s period in office.

But the MAS has majorities in each house of parliament and many mayors and local government across Bolivia, and has not given up on restoring the constitutional order.
