McCluskey blasts May's ‘shambolic’ Brexit deal

LEN McCLUSKEY lashed out at Theresa May’s “shambolic” Brexit deal today and urged her to step aside if she cannot deliver a better one.

The Unite general secretary called on MPs to “hold their nerve” and demand a better deal in the House of Commons.

Writing in the Huffington Post, he heavily criticised the terms of the deal presented to Parliament, saying: “There are no protections for workers’ rights, no barrier-free market access guarantees.

“It leaves Britain locked into arrangements we cannot exit from except with the other parties’ permission, a circumstance none of us would accept in any area of our lives.

“A shambolic negotiation has resulted in a shambolic deal, which offers Britain no control over its laws, money or borders.

“At best it offers temporary commitments, which mean nothing to those making long-term investment decisions.

“Businesses sent out to bat for this deal now should understand that this is little more than 21 months more of peering over the cliff-edge. It is not the certainty that you are being sold.”

Mr McCluskey said that it is possible to secure a parliamentary majority for leaving the European Union, but that it must be done by withstanding pressure from the “hard-line” rump of Conservative MPs, such as Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Instead he urged working with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who said today that Ms May’s deal is an “unparalleled and unacceptable loss of sovereignty which Labour will not accept on behalf of our country.”

Mr McCluskey continued: “She needs to reach out to Jeremy Corbyn and forget about Jacob Rees-Mogg and her disloyal cabinet.

“She needs to actually listen to trade union concerns, rather than pretending to do so.

“Jeremy Corbyn extended the possibility of agreement in his party conference speech in September.

“Now is the time to take up the offer.”

He also warned that if a better deal is not reached, the Prime Minister will have lost the authority to govern and must step down.

“In short, Ms May needs to act as a national leader and not as a party manager.”
