Sport in brief: May 25, 2022

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Chelsea’s Emma Hayes and Sam Kerr have been named the 2021-22 Women’s Super League manager and player of the year respectively.

Hayes, who has been in charge at the Chelsea since 2012, oversaw their third successive WSL title triumph and fifth in total, sealed with a 4-2 victory over Manchester United at Kingsmeadow on the final day of the season.

That match saw Australia striker Kerr fire in two stunning efforts to take her to 20 league goals for the campaign as she retained the Golden Boot.

MEN’S BOXING: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will step back down to super-middleweight to defend his status as undisputed champion against Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight on September 17.

Alvarez (57-2-2, 39KOs) remains the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO champion at 168lbs despite being outpointed by Russia’s Dmitry Bivol earlier this month when venturing up to light-heavyweight.

The Mexican has decided against an immediate rematch and will instead look to settle a long-running feud against Golovkin.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The BBC has apologised after a message appeared on screen saying “Manchester United are rubbish.”

The insult popped up on the news ticker at the bottom of the screen during a tennis update on the 9am to 10am news broadcast.

Later in the morning, a presenter apologised to any Manchester United fans who may have been offended.

She said the mistake had occurred as someone was learning how to operate the ticker and was “writing random things not in earnest.”

MEN’S FOOTBALL:  Emile Smith Rowe has returned to the England Under-21s squad for their crucial Euro 2023 qualifiers.

The Arsenal midfielder has dropped back down from the seniors, having last played for the Young Lions in October.

The Young Lions are second in Group G, three points behind the Czech Republic with two games in hand.
