Sport in brief with Jamie J: December 18, 2022

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Just two Irish Premiership games escaped the freeze over the weekend.

Champions Linfield cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over struggling Dungannon to move into second place, five points behind league leaders Larne, while Jack Gormley bagged a hat-trick as Cliftonville came from behind to beat bottom of the table Portadown 4-1.

Cliftonville are level on points with Linfield in third but have a game in hand.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: Australia beat India by seven runs in Mumbai to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in their five match international Twenty20 series.

Ellyse Perry top-scored for the Aussies with 72 not out from 42 balls as they reached 188-3 before their bowlers struck regularly to keep the Indian chase in check.

Harmanpreet Kaur hit 46 and Richa Ghosh smashed an undefeated 40 from just 19 balls to drag their reply to 181-7.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Celtic still lead the Scottish Premiership by nine points thanks to Callum McGregor’s late strike earning them a 1-0 win in Aberdeen after second-placed Rangers had come from behind twice to beat Hibernian 3-2 on Friday night in new manager Michael Beale’s first game in charge.

Hearts saw off Kilmarnock 3-1 and Ali Crawford scored twice in St Johnstone’s 2-1 win at Ross County.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: England continued their unbeaten tour of the West Indies with a 17-run win in the third match of their five match international Twenty20 series.

England had stuttered to 147-6 with Heather Knight scoring the only six of the innings in her 43 from 27 balls and then conceded 13 wides as the Windies made a positive start reaching 63-2 in good time before Charlie Dean took 4-19 to restrict them to 140-8.

MEN’S CRICKET: Sydney Thunder were bowled out for just 15 runs in 35 balls to record the world’s lowest ever score and shortest innings in a senior Twenty20 match.

Chasing the Adelaide Strikers’ 139-5 in the second round of the Big Bash League none of the Thunder’s batsmen reached double figures, number ten Brendan Doggett top scored with 4 and there were three extras, as Henry Thornton took 5-3 and Wes Agar 4-6.
