World in brief: October 10, 2022

PALESTINE: Mahmoud Samoudi, a 12-year-old boy, died today after Israeli soldiers shot him during a raid on Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Saturday.

Palestinian health officials said two other teens, aged 16 and 18, were killed in the raid and that 11 people were wounded.

Israel has been carrying out nightly raids across the West Bank following a spate of attacks against Israelis in the spring killed 19 people.

AUSTRIA: The government filed a legal complaint with the European Union’s top court today over plans by the bloc’s executive branch to label fossil gas and nuclear power generation as sustainable.

Austria’s environment minister Leonore Gewessler warned that the measure could “greenwash” nuclear power and gas despite the environmental damage they cause.

The EU’s executive commission plans to add certain nuclear and gas plants next year to a list that helps investors determine which projects are sustainable.

ETHIOPIA: Tigray rebels said today that Eritrea has extended its offensive into their region, as diplomats scramble to convene peace talks to resolve the almost two-year-long conflict.

In a statement Monday, the Tigray forces said that Eritrea’s military had launched an “extensive offensive” in the direction of Rama, Zalambessa and Tserona towns in north-eastern Tigray.

They called on Tigray’s population to “further intensify their campaign of self-defence.”

Communications to the areas affected by the fighting are down, and it is hard to verify the Tigray forces’ claims.

FRANCE: A former Liberian rebel went on trial in Paris today on charges of crimes against humanity, torture and acts of barbarism during the west African country’s civil war in the 1990s.

Kunti Kamara, 47, is accused of “complicity in massive and systematic torture and inhumane acts” against the civilian population committed in Liberia’s Lofa county in 1993-94, as one of the leaders of the Ulimo armed group.

He was arrested near Paris in 2018 and faces life imprisonment.
