Men's Football Oh Mane! Liverpool end City's unbeaten league run

Manchester City’s 22-game unbeaten run came to an end in spectacular fashion at Anfield today where Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ran riot.

Goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah had the stadium rocking as the home side moved up to third in the table.

Liverpool showed their intent early on when Joel Matip’s long ball was sent through to Mane by Firmino, but the winger’s touch was poor and the chance was gone.

Klopp’s side didn’t let City have the time on the ball they have become used to in recent weeks and it felt like the first time Pep Guardiola’s team had truly been tested by a similar standard of opposition.

Liverpool were eventually able to make this show on the scoreboard when Firmino found Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield and the Englishman drove at the City backline before firing across Ederson and inside the far post. The goal sent the Kop end into raptures as one of their new favourites celebrated with the rest of the team below them.

The home side created a couple more openings before their opposition were able to assert some dominance on the game. Salah was thwarted by John Stones at the last minute as he jinked through the box and Mane was caught on his heels when Georginio Wijnaldum set him up.

Despite coming into the game controlling possession for periods of the first half, City initially struggled to do anything with it. Kevin de Bruyne’s cross just missed Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane saw an effort deflect behind off Dejan Lovren.

But when Kyle Walker’s long pass was controlled by Sane on the left, the German winger was able to ghost past Joe Gomez towards goal and once there he blasted past compatriot Loris Karius at his near post. The ball was past the goalkeeper before he had chance to react but he could have perhaps been better positioned.

The floodgates opened in the second half and any errors which occurred during the goal Liverpool conceded were soon forgotten. Firmino was first up, shrugging off Stones before a sublime finish had Ederson rooted to the spot.

It didn’t look like it could get any better for Klopp’s side when Mane’s left-footed thunderbolt found the top corner, but it did when Salah collected Ederson’s poor clearance and stroked the ball over the City goalkeeper and into the net from 40 yards out.

Late strikes from Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan had the home fans worried for a few minutes, but their side hung on.
