Men’s Football Ozil's ‘sexy football’ sees the Gunners through to victory

Arsenal 3-1 Leicester by Harry Corton at Emirates Stadium

MESUT OZIL produced his best appearance in an Arsenal shirt on Monday, captaining his side to a 3-1 victory over Leicester City, their tenth consecutive win in all competitions.

Asked whether he agreed with the midfielder’s description of his team’s performance as “sexy football,” boss Unai Emery said “definitively, yes.”

“I think [Ozil] can play every match with this commitment and behaviour, and with his quality, whether he’s captain or not. We are going to demand this from every player in every match.”

Showing the leadership often lacking from his game, the German World Cup winner dragged his team back into the match after the visitors took the lead on the half hour.

Ben Chilwell raced onto Wilfred N’didi’s searching through ball and got the better of Hector Bellerin with a splendid first touch. The shot took a fortuitous deflection on its way in but it was all about the England defender’s quick movement.

If Bellerin had any misgivings about his culpability in the build-up to Leicester’s opener, it will quickly be forgotten as he combined superbly with his captain to get Arsenal back on level terms seconds before the interval.

Ozil picked up the ball on halfway and drove forward, eventually finding Bellerin to his right. The full-back’s low first-time cross went straight back to Ozil and he finessed a left footed shot in off the post.

After the restart, the Foxes were unlucky not to go in front again when N’didi saw his header crash onto the cross bar. He rose highest from a corner and, with Bernd Leno caught flapping, the hosts were saved only by the woodwork.

The Gunners did eventually get the breakthrough and Bellerin was the provider once again, this time teeing up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had only been on the field a matter of minutes, for a tap-in.

Ozil left barely a blade of grass untouched, playing a pivotal role in the sublime team move which culminated in his side’s third goal and was the nail in Leicester’s coffin.

Starting with the goalkeeper, Arsenal strung 14 passes together before a wickedly intelligent dummy by the captain diverted City’s attention, allowing the playmaker to receive the ball in space from Alexandre Lacazette then squaring for Aubameyang once again who scored his third brace of the season.

After their seventh Premier League victory in a row, Emery has given Arsenal their longest winning streak since 2015, leaving them fourth in the table and just two points off leaders Manchester City.
