Pashinyan wins ‘revolutionary majority’ in snap elections in Armenia

ACTING Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan won a “revolutionary majority” in the country’s parliamentary elections according to preliminary results released on Sunday.

The My Step Alliance bloc, which includes Mr Pashinyan’s Civil Contract Party, won 70.4 per cent of the vote based on results from all polling stations, the Central Election Commission website reported.

“Armenian citizens created a revolutionary majority at the parliament. If this trend continues, the majority won’t face any problems in implementing legislative changes,” Mr Pashinyan said.

Two opposition parties – Prosperous Armenia and Bright Armenia – cleared the 5 per cent threshold to enter parliament. However the former ruling Republican Party polled just 4.7 per cent and it was unclear whether it garnered enough votes to elect MPs.

Mr Pashinyan came to power after weeks of protests against corruption led to the ousting of former PM Serzh Sargsyan.

He has suggested developing closer ties to the United States and European Union, although says he will maintain Armenia’s longstanding relationship with Russia, which it relies on for military support and security.
