Poll pressuring Corbyn to back a second EU referendum is a ‘trap,’ say Lexit campaigners

LEFT-WING supporters of Brexit condemned a misleading poll today as a “trap” for suggesting that most Labour members want Jeremy Corbyn to back a second referendum.

The poll gave the impression that the Labour leader was at odds with the 550,000-strong party membership over Brexit by reporting that 72 per cent of around 1,050 members polled wanted a so-called “People’s Vote.”

However, the poll had a key finding that was ignored in reports that were splashed on the fronts of the Guardian and the Scotsman.

Almost half (47 per cent) of those surveyed between December 17 and 21 supported Mr Corbyn’s stance towards Brexit compared to 29 per cent that opposed it. Support for a second referendum had actually fallen, according to website Tory Fibs.

Doug Nicholls, chair of Trade Unionists Against the EU, told the Star that the selective reporting represents a “destructive and divisive obsession with a second referendum to try to get us to stay in the EU.

“Jeremy has rightly said that the Labour Party would implement Brexit, and that was the biggest mandate given to Parliament in history.

“So it is no surprise that those who want us to stay in would want to hide the reality of the support for Jeremy.”

Alex Gordon, convenor of Lexit – the Left Leave coalition during the 2016 referendum, said that all Labour MPs who were elected in the general election in 2017 were chosen on the basis of a manifesto that pledged to respect the referendum result, with two thirds of Labour-dominated areas voting for leave.

“It has been clear for a long time that there is a gap between the Parliamentary Labour Party and the leadership, the latter of which’s views were represented in the manifesto,” he said.

“This poll was an opinion poll heavily spun by [Labour peer] Lord Adonis to pressure the Labour leadership to endorse the idea of a so-called People’s Vote but it would undermine the basis on which Labour increased its net gain of seats since 1997.

“It is a trap into which Corbyn is not going to fall.

“The only People’s Vote we need is a general election, so a left-led Labour government that can carry out its manifesto only outside the EU and the single market.”

Yesterday, Mr Corbyn responded to the poll by saying that his priority was to oppose a no-deal Brexit as well as PM Theresa May’s unpopular deal, which MPs will finally vote on this month.
