TORY aide Sam Armstrong, who is accused of raping a woman in his boss’s Westminster office has a “potentially huge” motivation to lie, a court heard yesterday.
Conservative chief of staff Mr Armstrong, 24, allegedly abused his position to attack an intern when she fell asleep after a night drinking in Parliament last year.
The aide to South Thanet MP Craig Mackinlay denies two counts of rape, one of sexual assault and one of assault by penetration, claiming they had consensual sex.
Delivering his closing speech at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutor Mark Heywood QC advised the jury to compare the pair, saying: “Put them side by side and ask the question: What is their motivation to lie?
“So far as Mr Armstrong is concerned, the motivation to lie is potentially huge and therefore you need to take his evidence with some circumspection.
“It doesn't mean he was from the beginning not to be believed ... but you do have to take that into account and think about it.”
