Women's Football Vivianne Miedema eyes Champions League with Arsenal after signing long-term contract extension

In-form Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema penned a new deal with the club today, making clear that her aim is to win the the Champions League with this side.

Miedema has been in blistering form this season, scoring 20 goals in 14 games, and has led the Gunners to the top of the Women’s Super League.

Joining from Bayern Munich last May, the Dutch international has become one of the deadliest strikers on the planet but says it’s not about personal accolades for her, but winning titles with her teammates.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, she said: “I think the direction the club is going in, me being happy here, the fact we’re playing good football, it all made me really appreciate the club. I just want to be a part of what we’re doing here and keep growing. I’m happy and I hope we’re just going to do a lot of good stuff at the club.

“The way we play is really good but also really enjoyable. Obviously with the way we play, we want to win prizes and I think we’re going to do that in the next couple of years. Then we can only keep growing. As long as we all just enjoy it as much as we do right now, I think we’re definitely going to win prizes.

“I’m just really happy that the team is doing well. Obviously because I am a striker, I need to score goals. It’s just kind of my job to do it and I just want to help the team in any way possible. I think that’s just my focus, not really winning awards myself. As a team. I want to win a Champions League, so that’s what we need to do.”

Manager Joe Montemurro heaped praise on the 22-year-old, saying her “hunger” is vital to this team.

“Vivianne is a fantastic striker, one of the best in the women’s game. She has a fantastic skill to find the back of the net in some of the most difficult positions, and her hunger to score and win is something that every team needs. We’re delighted that she’s signed a new long-term contract with us.”

Arsenal are currently joint-top with Manchester City in the WSL but have a game in hand on their rivals.

And with a League Cup quarter-final match against Birmingham in January, as the Gunners attempt to retain the trophy, Miedema is pleased with where the club is heading.

“I think the direction the club is going in, me being happy here, we’re playing good football here — it just made me really appreciate the club here,” she told Arsenal Player.

“I just want to be a part of what we’re doing here and keep growing over the next couple of years. I’m happy and I hope we’re just going to do a lot of good stuff at the club.”

Lisa Evans, who put pen to paper on Tuesday, said Miedema’s extension is the perfect way to attract other top players to the club.

“I’m delighted she’s signed a new contract,” the Scotland international told Arsenal Player. “Without a doubt. I’m absolutely delighted that she’s chosen to sign.

“You can see how important she’s been this season especially, how vital she’s been for her goals. We want top players to be at this club and we want to bring other top players in. That’s the most important thing.

“If we want to stay at the top, we need to bring good players in and keep the good players that we have here.”
