Protests surround Knesset over ban on protest itself

PROTESTS surrounded the Knesset today as it voted on proposals to ban protest itself because of coronavirus.

The Israeli parliament’s constitution, law and justice committee approved proposals to apply the ban on people moving beyond a kilometre (1,093 yards) from their homes to protest for a week, with an option for the government to extend that to 21 days.

The measure was approved by the committee after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud withdrew a failed attempt to get a six-month ban on protests.

A convoy of cars clogged Jerusalem streets while demonstrators rallied outside the Knesset. Protester Efrat Ben Barak said the government was denying the right to protest “for political reasons, not health reasons.”

Weekly demonstrations calling for Mr Netanyahu’s resignation over corruption charges have attracted thousands for months on end.

Israel became the first country in the world to impose a second lockdown earlier this month, but protests have so far been exempt from the rule against leaving home.
