RMT issues warning of passenger surge ahead of expected heatwave

RAIL union RMT issued a “red alert” to its members today over an expected surge in passenger numbers on trains to the seaside this weekend after very hot weather was forecast for much of the country.

Millions of people are expected to head to the coast and other leisure attractions, the union warned, raising fresh concerns that non-compliance with rules on social distancing and the use of face masks could put front-line transport staff at risk.

RMT senior assistant general secretary Mick Lynch said: “We know that train operators are expecting a surge in passengers this weekend from Blackpool to Southend, Brighton to Bournemouth and all of the ‎other UK tourist hot spots as temperatures are set to rise.

“RMT reps on the ground are on alert and will be advising our members of their rights and particularly their right to a safe working environment.

“It is important that the Public Health England Covid-19 safety standards are maintained at all times. The combination of sun and alcohol is a clear threat to that.”
