Rodrigo Duterte plans trip to Israel

President hopes to boost links after kitting out police force with Israeli arms

PHILIPPINE President Rodrigo Duterte will visit Israel next month to strengthen ties, his Foreign Ministry said today.

Mr Duterte’s government has become closer to Benjamin Netanyahu’s since acquiring Israeli arms, including Galil assault rifles and pistols, for its police force, which is engaged on a “war on drugs” that has involved the slaughter of tens of thousands of civilians.

Mr Duterte has apologised for comments in 2016 where he compared his war on drugs to the Holocaust, saying: “Hitler massacred three million Jews. There are three million drug addicts — I’d be happy to slaughter them.”

Historians actually put the number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust at six million.

“I mentioned the word Jewish and that was terribly wrong,” he later clarified.

“I’m not one of the racist members of this republic.”
