THE Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has called an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to debate the external review into the union’s response to the NHS pay offer for England.
The move comes after RCN chief executive and general secretary Janet Davies resigned on Monday evening, following the criticism of the union's response to the government's recent pay proposal.
Mr Davies backtracked last month after telling members that they would receive an immediate 3 per cent increase this summer.
She offered a “sincere personal apology” because the pay deal was “not as straightforward” as the union leadership had said.
Ms Davies will step down at the end of August and Dame Professor Donna Kinnair, an executive member, will assume the role of acting chief executive and general secretary.
RCN said it was “awaiting the full findings of a review into the past few months’ events” and would then “take an informed decision as to the long-term executive leadership of the organisation.”
The EGM will take place on Friday September 28 at 11am in Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
