NEXT year’s Badminton Horse Trials are set to take place behind closed doors.
The prestigious event, which was first staged in 1949 and attracts thousands of spectators, did not run this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Organisers say there is “potential to include a limited number of spectators” should guidelines and restrictions allow.
The competition, which is scheduled from May 6-9 across four days of dressage, cross-country and showjumping, will be a pivotal focus for the Great Britain eventing selectors ahead of next summer’s Tokyo Olympics.
Badminton event director Jane Tuckwell said: “We realise that this is not the scenario everyone would wish for.
“But we feel by announcing our intentions now, it will give all involved in whatever capacity the opportunity to plan accordingly.
“To deliver the ‘behind closed doors’ event will not be without its challenges, but we look forward to bringing a great competition.”
