Men's Football Batley and Spen hosts football tournament supporting Show Racism the Red Card

A SCHOOL in the constituency where Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered by a far-right extremist three years ago hosted a “Show Racism the Red Card” 5-a-side football challenge yesterday.

General union GMB took part in the tournament at Upper Batley High School to support the Red Card campaign which has featured sporting and entertainment stars.

Participants yesterday included actor Bhakser Patel of TV series Emmerdale and rugby league star Garreth Carvell.

Ms Cox’s successor as Labour MP for Batley and Spen, Tracy Brabin, hosted the event, which included a special assembly with Ms Brabin and guests including GMB general secretary Tim Roache and Yorkshire and North Derbyshire regional secretary Neil Derrick.

The 5-a-side tournament featured a GMB veterans’ team including Carvell, Patel and Roache.

Ms Cox was murdered in her constituency in June 2016 by Thomas Mair, who had links to neonazi organisations.
