Women's Hockey Britain 'disappointed' they let lead slip against the United States

GISELLE ANSLEY admitted Britain were “disappointed” and “frustrated” after failing to claim all three points in their FIH Pro League home opener in east London’s Olympic Park on Saturday, even though they won the shoot-out.

Tess Howard and Anna Toman scored the Olympic champions’ shootout goals, with Amy Tennant saving Taylor West’s final effort to send the 4,000 crowd home relatively happy Defender Ansley gave Britain a 1-0 lead with 91 seconds left in the first half, after sending a penalty corner across US goalie Kelsey Bing and into the back of the net, but Loren Moyer equalised late in the third quarter from close range off another set-piece.

Ansley had a great chance to win it, but struck the corner of bar and post with five minutes left.

“Obviously we’re glad to come away with two points, rather than no points, but we’re a bit disappointed we let a 1-0 lead slip,” she said. “We stopped playing our game in the second half, got a bit scrappy, and we need to have a look at that and put things right for the next game.

“We’re frustrated at just scoring one goal with the amount of chances, circle penetrations and corners we had. The convert rates probably not good enough. That’s something that we know we need to improve.”

Nevertheless, Ansley took her goal well.

“Before the game, you have a look at where you’re looking to score, where you think you can exploit their goalkeeper, so we were looking at going low and across the goalie,” she said.

The 27-year-old, who marshals Britain’s back-line, was almost surprised to find herself in with a great chance of winning it late on.

She said: “I don’t know what I was doing finding myself up there! But I probably should have done better with that as well, when you get a chance, on the backhand pretty near the shoulder of the circle. I could have made the keeper make a save at least, but we obviously created something decent to have that opportunity.”

And she was full of praise for shootout stars Tennant, Howard and Toman, with the latter’s cool finish proving the difference.

“Anna’s very well known for her composure on the ball,” Ansley said. “Credit to the girls who would go and take one. It’s not easy in front of how ever many thousands of people up there and slot in in the back of the net.”

Britain move up a place to sixth in the standings and face China on Friday night, with push back at 7.30pm.
