Men's Football Espanyol open probe into racist fans

ESPANYOL are investigating their own fans after Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams claimed he was racially abused during Saturday’s La Liga match.

Williams, a 25-year-old forward born in Bilbao, reportedly told his captain Iker Muniain about the abuse, who then informed referee Jose Sanchez Martinez about it.

Williams tweeted after the game: “It is very sad that today we continue to experience racism scenes in football. We have to end it among everyone. Thanks for your support.”

Espanyol later tweeted: “The club is already investigating the incidents of racist character uttered by a few against Inaki Williams.

“@RCDEspanyol strongly and explicitly condemns any sign of racism on soccer fields.”

The match at the Estadio Cornella-El Prat was preceded by violence, which was condemned by both clubs.

Espanyol tweeted: “We condemn any display of violence and racism. These attitudes have no place in our football.”

Their opponents issued a statement on their website which read: “Athletic Club strongly condemns and disapproves of any threat or act of violence.

“Athletic Club, as a centenary entity that advocates sport and non-violence, wants to strongly condemn the incidents that took place ahead of the match in Cornella.

“We believe in a healthy rivalry, with no violent confrontations, where only those supporters who respect their opponents regardless of the circumstances or results are welcomed.

“Zero tolerance against any form of violence.

“Our unconditional support to all the fans who understand that football must be a meeting point among different people, peaceful and diverse.”

The match finished in a 1-1 draw, with Asier Villalibre giving the visitors a 12th minute lead before Raul De Tomas levelled in the 63rd minute, lifting Espanyol off the foot of the table.
