Racing Newbury’s stellar card has a lot to offer this afternoon

IT’S GROUP One time again, this time in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and LE BRIVIDO, formerly with Andre Fabre and now with Aidan O’Brien, can land his first success since the Jersey Stakes of 2017 by securing this valuable contest.

The son of Siyouni has endured lots of niggly problems since then, but was a huge eyecatcher last time out in the Gladness Stakes at Naas when getting to within a length and a quarter of Imagining after rearing up badly leaving the stalls.

The fifth home that day, Romanised, also ran well and should improve, especially if the ground remains on the fast side of good, but I fancy the Irish raider to give A.P yet another Group One success this season.

The huge betting race of the day is the London Gold Cup Handicap at 3.00, a mile-and-a-quarter event restricted to three-year-olds only.

It’s a difficult task for us punters to know how much improvement remains in each of the 16 runners, but having reviewed their form and seen the replays I think that DUBAI INSTINCT (a 16/1 shot, nap) could have been underestimated by the bookmakers.

The Brian Meehan-charge showed a tremendous attitude and plenty of ability when making all to land an above average maiden at Nottingham over this trip last month.

He was forced to make his own running that day and ran quite green out in front, but I am convinced he will improve markedly again given a lead in this contest and tucking in behind as a presser.

Indeed he may well be forced to come from further off the pace here as he is drawn in the car park in stall 15, but I still prefer his claims at a nice price ahead of the likes of the more experienced Forest of Dean, Korcho from the in-form Hughie Morrison yard and the likeable Good Birthday.

STAR CATCHER (nb) can bag another big prize for the Gosden/Dettori axis in the fillies’ Listed event at 4.50, the final Oaks’ trial of the spring, while I also like the look of THRAVE off a light-weight in the one mile handicap due off at 5.25.

There are some good betting propositions on the Thirsk card this afternoon and the big race of the day, the 7f handicap at 4.30, could well go the way of DANIELSFLYER for Michael Dods.

The selection has been a victim of his own consistency, his last win having come off a mark of 93 as a three-year-old and following 16 further defeats he has to race off 91 here.

However, he showed he retains all of his old ability when a fast-finishing second to Foolaad at Doncaster in March over six furlongs and is much better suited to this sharp seven furlongs.

The big race at Newmarket is the King Charles II Stakes at 2.40 and in a small but select field, the returning JASH should have too much class for the likes of Azano and Far Above.

Finally, have a second glance at MOSTAHEL in the six furlong handicap at Doncaster at 8.05.

The gelding has yet to open his account on turf in six attempts, but the handicapper has given him a real chance here off a rating of 73, some 24lbs lower than 10 months ago.
