Sport in brief with Jamie J: August 4, 2022

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Twelve weeks after Kostas Tsimikas slotted home the decisive spot kick to seal Liverpool’s FA Cup win on penalties over Chelsea, in front of just under 85,000 fans at Wembley, Redcar Athletic host Seaham Red Star at Green Lane tomorrow evening in the first of 208 extra preliminary qualifying round games for this season’s competition.

Other standout ties over the weekend include Emley’s visit to former First Division club Glossop North End tomorrow and previous Cup winners Bury travelling to Hallam, the second-oldest football club in the world.

The oldest club, Sheffield, are also on the road for a trip to Eccleshill United. Ten-time winners of the FA Amateur Cup, Bishop Auckland face Guisborough Town while Tooting and Mitcham, who reached the fourth round of the FA Cup in 1976, are at Cobham.

All winning teams receive £1,125 in prize money while the losers take home just £375.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The second round of the Welsh League Cup begins Saturday night with three-time winners Aberavon’s Afan Lido taking on Cwmbran Celtic.

Briton Ferry Llansawel had beaten Afan Lido 3-2 in the first round, but were kicked out of the competition after “breaching an administrative rule.”

Llandudno and Abergavenny were also removed from the competition after fielding ineligible players during their victories in round one.

In this evening’s other fixtures, Cefn Druids host Buckley Town, Haverfordwest take on Barry Town and Caernarfon Town are at Holyhead Hotspur.

Tomorrow current League Cup holders Connah’s Quay Nomads take on Cymru Premier champions The New Saints, the most successful team in the competition’s history.

The lowest-ranked team to reach the second round, Caersws — who compete in the third-tier Ardal North East League — face Holywell Town.
